magazine double page spread analysis
Double page spread analysis
The headline of the article is gossip girl, which is intertextuality to the popular TV show also called gossip girl. This makes the headline quite witty and means that many people will make the link and already have an idea on what the article is about. This could suggest that the target audience would be young female adults, as these are the types of people that would be the primary target audience for the TV show. However, this headline doesn't give a lot away, intriguing the audience to read it and understand more. The headline is short and snappy to intrigue the reader. Half of the headline is pink and the other half is white, linking to the house style, of pink, black and white. Two different fonts are also used throughout the article, again linking to the house style. All of this links together, making the magazine look very professional and well organised on the page.
The main image is of the woman who the article is about, Nicole Bitchie, it shows her looking and facing away from the camera, creating enigma for the audience as to what she is looking at. Although the magazine looks like it could be for women because of the colour scheme, Nicole is wearing very little clothing and very high heels. This could make her sexualised, meaning the magazines secondary target audience could be men. This therefore shows that the audience for this magazine is fragmented, as they are targeting different groups of people. Although there is a lot of light in the image, there is a shadow on her face which could link to the fact that she is a blogger, and people don't really know who she is behind her stage name. Under the main image is the by-lines, which show in this case the stylist, hair and makeup artists. This promotes them and their work so that they can be hired by others to work for them.
A pull quote is used at the top, before the article to create enigma as to what the article is going to be about and also to show Nicole's opinions. The quote is 'People thought my site was bigger than it was... They thought I was popping!' The ellipsis used creates a sense of mystery, as it suggests that some of the quote has been missed out. Mystery is also created, as the pull quote doesn't give anything away about what the article is actually about. The use of the word 'popping' could suggest that the target audience is teenagers, through the use of this slang term. The quote is in a lot bigger font than the main text, showing that it's more important, and also it draws the readers attention before the main text does.
A stand first is also used on this double page spread, it says 'Nicole Bitchie, the famously fearless gossip blogger, is afraid of the ocean.' This stand first shows us Nicole's job and why she is famous, to give us an insight into her life. It also says a little unknown fact about her, that she is afraid of the ocean, which creates enigma for the audience making them want to read on. The stand first also uses alliteration, 'famously fearless' which attracts the audiences attention. The stand first is all in capital letters to show that it is very important to read before the audience reads the main text. Also, it attracts the readers attention.
There is also a tagline, which says 'the for-real-rags-to-riches story of Nicole Bitchie, the infamous blogger who cannot tell a lie'. This could also be a link to intertextuality, as it shows a link to the famous children's story of Cinderella. This could also show a message to the audience of the magazine that you can do anything you want to if you put your mind to it. The fact that the tagline says 'cannot tell a lie' this makes the audience interested, as there is a sense of enigma by the fact that the tagline stops short leaving the audience wanting to know more. In the tagline, it says Nicole's name in bold, suggesting that she is a celebrity and of importance. At the end of the tagline it says who the article is written by. This means that the audience can look for other stories by that author if they like that article, and also it promotes the author to maybe get more possible writing jobs etc.
In the bottom corners of both pages, it shows the month and year of publish. This constantly reminds you of the time of year, and also if you want to know which issue it is, you don't have to turn all the way to the front cover. The website, www.ebony.com, is also in the bottom corners to remind readers to visit the website and again so they don't have to flick through the magazine to find it. It also reminds us of the name of the magazine, as it is in the website name. There is also page numbers in the bottom corners, which are helpful for the reader to look at the contents page and see where the article they want to read is in the magazine.
The main text is set up into three columns, making the text appear tidy and not all over the page. The main text is all in the same font type and size all the way through to make the magazine look professional. The font is also the same as the date line at the bottom to make the page look well organised. The main text is written in informal language to relax the reader.
There is also a box in the middle of the main text which talks about all of Nicole's favourite things, this means that the audience can get to know her better and also relate to her and see she is not just a celebrity. This box uses two different fonts and two different colours which all fit in with the house style of the magazine, making it look organised and professional. In the box the word 'favs' is used, and also listed is Nicole's favourite technology items, this could suggest that the primary target audience could be young people, as this is the kind of thing they are interested in.
This article could attract a mass audience of people who like to read this magazine, and also young adult females who are the primary target audience. However, this magazine could attract a niche audience of people who like Nicole Bitchie, and people who just like reading blogs. I think this article could be aimed at anyone from the social economic model, as it shows someone going from being in the C2,D,E section of the model to the A,B,C1 section of the model. This article would attract aspirers, as they want to know how they can get rich and to be liked, they would see Nicole as a role model. People could use this article to find out more information on Nicole and blogging, or to escape from their daily lives and read about something different.

Style magazine analysis
Magazine Analysis
The main cover image shows a woman wearing a red dress and red lipstick to represent the time or year. She is looking away from the camera which intrigues the audience as to what she is looking at. The camera uses shallow focus, which focuses on the model and blurs out the background, so that she is the focus of the image, again attracting the audiences attention. She has open body language, suggesting she is confident, connoting that the audience will buy the magazine to be confident like her. She looks around in her late twenties/thirties, which could attract other women of a similar age group to read the magazine, they would be the primary target audience. The secondary target audience could be friends and relatives of the women in their twenties/thirties, showing there is a fragmented audience for this magazine. This magazine could be said to have a mass audience, as there are a lot of women in the age group, however there could be a niche audience of people who have a particular interest in fashion. The audience will also be passive, as they would be influenced to buy the magazine from the information on the front cover. The people that would buy this magazine would be aspirers according to psychographics, as aspirers want wealth and people to like them. They would buy this magazine to get the latest designer fashion to show off to their friends about it. The magazine could create therefore social integration (uses and gratifications),
The masthead is in gold and fades to white at the bottom, which looks like snow, again linking to Christmas. The models head goes in front of the masthead, showing she is more important and the main focus is her. The font is serif, along with all of the cover lines to make the magazine look pulled together and professional. It also creates part of the house style, which also includes the colours gold red and white which are all associated with winter and Christmas. The house style also includes white circles down one side of the magazine, which represents snow again showing December and Christmas.
The magazine is £4.50 and one cover lines suggest 'Designer travel'. This could portray that the magazine is for a higher class audience in the A, B, C1 category of the social economic model. Also, at the top of the page, it says the magazine issue and the month and year of publish. As it says the month, this shows that the magazine must come out every month.
One cover line says 'Designer travel the luxury destinations to escape to this winter,' this shows that the target audience is more high class, supported by the words 'designer' and 'luxury'. The word 'escape' could also link to uses and gratifications, as the article is all about escaping from your daily life. Another cover line is 'Glamour 1001 fashion looks to fall in love with.' The number '1001' is a high number which shocks the reader into buying the magazine, as they want to see all of these fashion looks. Some parts of the cover lines are in capital letters to attract the audiences attention and to show that this text is important and it should be read before the text not in capital letters. Another cover line says 'My stylish city. Readers share their ultimate shopping secrets.' The fact that they have used readers from the magazine to create this article creates enigma for the audience, as they want to know things that other readers know, linking to social integration and also personal identity, as the audience can relate to others to adjust their ways of shopping.
The main cover says 'Your most stylish winter yet!' The use of the word 'your' creates direct address to the reader by sounding like they bare talking to them directly. This gets the audience intrigued, as they want more information (uses and gratifications), as the cover line doesn't give anything away. The main cover line is also in a really big font, connoting its importance.

Fashion magazine analysis
Magazine analysis
This magazine uses the colours white, black and pink to create the house style. The use of these colours and the colours in the main image create a summer vibe, representing the season. The house style also uses some serif and sans serif fonts to show variety and so its not repetitive. The masthead is in the pink colour to fit with the house style and again to show its summertime.
In the main cover image, Ellie Fanning's head overlaps some of the masthead to show that she is the most important item on the front cover. She also uses direct address by looking directly into the camera, creating personal identity. This attracts the audiences attention and makes them want to buy the magazine, as they can connect with Ellie. People might also want to buy the magazine for social interaction, as their friends could have spoken about it to them. Her body language is open, as she has her arms behind her back, to show she is confident. This will make the audience aspire to be like Ellie, so they might buy the magazine to find out why she is so confident and how they can be more like her. She is wearing a fashionable dress, linking to the theme of the magazine and showing that she is someone to aspire to be like as she has confidence and good fashion sense. Ellie Fanning is also a famous actress, creating star appeal for the audience, which is another reason to buy the magazine. This also attracts a secondary audience of Ellie Fanning fans, this therefore shows a fragmented audience, as the primary audience would be mainly young adults (16-24). The audience could be said to be mass, as there are a lot of girls in this age bracket. However, part of the audience could be niche, as people could read the magazine as they specifically like fashion. I think the audience would be from the class A, B, C1 in the social economic model, as it shows a famous actress on the front cover, and she is wearing an expensive and high quality looking dress. I think this magazine will attract the mainstreamers from the psychographics, as it is a magazine with different things for everyone to enjoy in the age range.
Part of a cover line says 'Swim & sun in style'. This shows alliteration through the words beginning with S. This creates enigma about what kind of things will be in the magazine, making the audience want to buy the magazine. They will also want to buy it to see how they can look fashionable in different situations. The cover line 'Beauty Bullies' also creates mystery, through alliteration as it doesn't give away what the story is about, so you have to buy the magazine to find out. The main cover line says 'Summer! What to wear + how to wear it', which is a clear and straightforward cover line, attracting audiences that are interested in this summers on trend fashion.
The tag line is 'Canada's No1 fashion & beauty magazine'. This clearly shows what is in the magazine, and by using 'No1' audiences are attracted, as it shows that it is a very good magazine. This shows that the target audience is predominantly female and adults, which is shown by the cover line 'Why we want beastly men'. The tag line can also attract niche audiences of people who are interested in fashion or beauty.
The date line only includes the season and the year 'Summer 2014' which could suggest that the magazine only comes out four times year, for every season.

DVD cover analysis
DVD cover analysis
The title of the film The mortal instruments suggests a genre of fantasy, as it uses ideas that are unrealistic and relate to death. The use of the words 'mortal' and 'bones' suggest that the a theme of the film is death. The 'o' in the title is in a shape that is repeated on the DVD cover, showing it is obviously important to the narrative. The central cover image shows the two main characters in a medium shot. The main characters have very serious faces, suggesting that the narrative goes a bit dark and that there could be a negative ending. The lighting in this image is very dark with shadows to show that the characters are mysterious and that we need to watch the film to get more information about them. The characters use direct address by looking directly into the camera, this catches the audiences eye to buy the film.
There is a lot of blue light used on the front and back cover, which links to the theme of fantasy, as it suggests cold, which could suggest that they are cold towards each other. However, they are together in the main image and stills, which could suggest that they are quite close, and the blue lights could signify lightening. In one of the stills there is fire, which could connote that there is adventure and action in the film as well.
Both of the characters are wearing leather jackets, which connotes youth and also makes them look like bad guys. These contradicting connotations create enigma, as we don't know which one could relate to the characters. Tattoos are visible in many of the stills, which could suggest darkness and evil occur in the film. Both of the actors are very well know and are in famous films. This could create star appeal, as a wider audience may be reached through these actors being in the film. The settings in the images are all dark with blue lights, supporting the fantasy genre.
The tagline is 'two worlds will collide'. This shows us that the genre includes action, adventure and fantasy, as it suggests there could be a war of sorts. This also creates enigma about the narrative, as it doesn't give anything away. The age rating is 12, showing that there will be a bit of violence. This shows that the film wont be too gory or violent, but it will have some in it to make the story line more interesting. The synopsis includes actors names, and also another film they have been in. It also includes just enough of the narrative to intrigue the audience but not to much so they give the story away. They have done this to show the actors are famous and in case people don't recognise them, it shows they are good actors reflecting on the film. The stills show people casting spells, which could suggest part of the narrative, and that the actors will have to fight against the bad guys. The spells could suggest a dark theme and also suggests fear.
Special features are also included with the DVD, such as a music video and deleted scenes. This gives the audience extra information that they can't get anywhere else. This makes the audience want to buy the DVD, not just watch the film on Netflix.
The distributor is e one, which is a well known distributor, this is a sign of quality, as it shows that the film has been professionally made.
There are ratings with starts on the back of the DVD cover, this shows expert criticism. The ratings are all four stars and say good things about the film, making others want to buy it.

magazine analysis Q
Magazine analysis
There is a main image in the centre of the magazine of Cheryl Cole. She is looking directly into the camera to create direct address, and also to catch the readers eye. The cover lines are overlapping her hair, but not her face, showing she is important. Cheryl is very famous, creating star appeal for people to buy the magazine. Cheryl also looks very confident in this image, making the audience what to buy it so they be confident.
The house style includes four colours: black, white, red and grey. The red and white works well, as they are also the colours for there logo. The colours also stand out, as they are against a darker background. The logo is a big Q, which is the name of the magazine, the logo is at the top, as this area of the page is the first area that the audience look at. The use of red lipstick on Cheryl links to the house style of the magazine and makes her stand out so she is not lost in the background, as there is a lot of red on the front cover. The tag line attracts audiences attention, as it says that it is 'The UK's biggest music magazine', the use of the word biggest, makes the audience want to buy it as it is obviously very popular.
The use of ellipsis intrigues the audience and creates enigma, as they would be missing out on information if they did not buy the magazine.
A graphic feature is used on the cover, to show importance and to stand out. In the circle, it uses the words 'untold' and 'unseen', these words make the audience want to buy the magazine, as they are getting information in this issue of Q that they can get nowhere else. The graphic feature also matches in with the house style to make the magazine look professional.
One of the cover lines just lists different artists and bands. This cover line could attract music fans of any genre, or fans specifically of these certain bands. Also, some people may want to learn about another genre of music and different artists. Another cover line lists a few of the '10 best new acts'. As it doesn't list all of them and it includes a hamster in this list, the audience is intrigued and wants to know more, so will buy the magazine.
The words 'biggest' and 'best' are buzz words and are used to entice the reader and to intrigue them so that they want to buy the magazine.
The word 'rocks' is in big red writing to get the audiences attention, also as not much is given away in the cover line, they will want to see why Cheryl rocks.

Look magazine analysis
Magazine Analysis
The main image is of Victoria Beckham, who is very famous, creating star appeal. Her power is shown by the fact that the image of her is in front of the masthead. In the image her pose shows she is confident, making the readers aspire to be like her. The audience can relate to Victoria, as the primary target audience is older teenage girls. A pull quote is used from the interview with Victoria Beckham, to create enigma and make the audience want to buy the magazine to know what is going on in her life.
The masthead is big, bold and bright purple to stand out to the audience and be the first thing that they look at, supported by the rule of thirds. The house style is bright purple and green, to show that it is spring time. These colours are also a contrast to what Victoria is wearing, so that you can still read the cover lines over the image of her. The cover line 'Hello Spring' also shows the time of year. Also, in the house style a few different serif and sans serif fonts are used throughout the front cover.
The magazine shows a image of an attractive male in the corner of the magazine, showing that the magazine is aimed at females. There are also several smaller images of women fashion and makeup items, again showing that the magazine is targeting females. These images are used next to the cover lines to give the audience an extra bit of information and to get their attention.
The word 'Plus' is used as a buzz word, to entice the audience to buy the magazine, as it suggests that there is extra content than other magazines. The phrase 'Big time' is in bold and underlined to show its importance to the cover line. Also, a full stop is used after both words to create emphasis and importance of the cover line. Rhetorical questions are used to get the audience involved and intrigued, especially if the topic links to their life. Alliteration is also used 'The best bag', this creates emphasis and enigma.
The website is included to get the readers to look up extra content online and to get the audience excited as to what is on the website. A hashtag is also used to show that the magazine is aimed at people in their late teens, as they will understand what this means, whereas older people may not.
Direct address is used, as Victoria Beckham is looking directly into the camera to attract the audience to look at the magazine. Also, direct address is used in the cover line where it says 'We've been expecting you.' On the magazine it uses a number (263) to show the amount of new arrivals in the magazine. This is a big number so gets the audience intrigued to see all of the new things. Next to this an arrow is used, to get the audience to open the magazine and be intrigued by whats on the inside.
